Crusade

Explosions rocked Arcadia as Jone raced through the night. Her new armor clinked softly as she sprinted, greatsword in hand, in an attempt to lose her pursuers. But the Queen’s men and women were everywhere, and garm did not lose scents so easily. Hunting parties weren’t as fun to evade when outnumbered, outgunned, and alone.

Fortunately, Jone was never truly alone.

“Right turn! Now left! Down that alley!”

She didn’t even have to think about it to follow the Voice’s directions; she just let her feet follow the impulses. Over the last several days of guerrilla action, she and the Voice had undergone a crash course in symbiosis and teamwork, and the results were, from Jone’s perspective, nothing short of remarkable. Even if the mysterious entity did have an irritating, acerbic personality, at least Jone was getting better at knowing when and how to listen to it.

Of course, that wasn’t always a good thing.

You led me down a dead end! Jone snapped mentally, her breaths heaving in and out in hungry gasps.

“I’m doing the best I can! I’m not omnipresent, you know! You’re too limited for that!”

Jone wasn’t sure what any of that meant, and she didn’t have time to try to figure it out. She flattened herself against a wall as airship spotlights stabbed down, piercing the warm, wet fog, their blazing lights scouring the city streets for her.

Jone knew she’d messed up. During the last few days, she’d already hit the Harbourmaster’s office, then destroyed the Arcadian debt registry at the Bureau of Tax and Trade. Tonight, she’d come to Robin Hood her way into the Queen’s Vaults themselves, planning to redistribute the money on her own terms to those it had been stolen from. But apparently thrice was too much, because tonight, they were waiting in force and wise to her methods. And unlike the storied Lady Robin herself, Jone had no convenient forest hideout to escape back to.

Even after the immediate danger of the airships was past, she continued to lean there against the chill stone, trying to catch her breath and rest her burning legs, listening to the shouts of men and echoing growls of garm as the hunters closed in.

There’s a way out, she told herself and Voice alike. There’s always a way out; there has to be.

The Voice didn’t reply, instead projecting quiet confidence and reassurance. But Jone could feel the tremors of uncertainty behind the silent facade.

Jone jumped as, behind her, wood struck stone and a door flopped open. The golden haired soldier spun, great blade at the ready—

And stared into the amused eyes of an old woman with platinum gray hair, tan, weathered skin, and twinkling blue eyes. “Well, fancy meetin’ you here,” drawled Old Lady Belmonte.

Jone just stood there, her mouth hanging open.

The old woman sighed. “So much for th’ witty banter, I guess. Best you just come inside ‘fore they catch you.” She slid out of the way of the window, beckoning.

Jone stood on her tiptoes, trying to look inside. The window was too tall for her to peer through easily.
